Striped Skunk

(Mephitis mephitis)


The largest skunk, the striped skunk is an omnivorous mammal the size of a house cat, and is well-known for its black-and-white striped coat and the strong odor secreted by its scent glands. Females den together in burrows while the males den by themselves. Successful in developed areas, striped skunks are sometimes kept as pets. Though often confused with mustelids, skunks are a distinct evolutionary line.

Where:Found in low-altitude habitats throughout North America.

When: Striped skunks are crepuscular.
