Ringtail

(Bassariscus astutus)


Along with the raccoon, the ringtail is the only other North American member of the family procyonidae (superfamily musteloidea). An agile climber, the ringtail's ankles can rotate 180 degrees and its striped tail (longer than the rest of its body) provides ballast.

Where: Native to the western US and Mexico, ringtails nest in hollow trees and abandoned structures.

When: Ringtails are nocturnal.
