Pocket Gopher

(Cratogeomys)


Pocket gophers are true gophers, not to be confused with squirrels which are sometimes called gophers. Both are known for their cheek pockets. Burrowers, gophers leave characteristic mounds of dirt, often to the consternation of humans in developed areas. They are larder-hoarders (the doomsday preppers of the animal kingdom).

Where: Like squirrels, gophers may utilize communal dens with each individual having its own entrance.
