Long-billed Curlew

(Numenius americanus)


Also called the sickle bird or candlestick bird, this species can be found along the coasts of western and central North America. It is the largest occurring sandpiper of its region, growing up to 26 inches long and weighing up to 2 pounds at adulthood. They have a long downward-curved bill, a small head and a long neck. The plumage is light cinnamon, with a brown-streaked crown.
