Grey Fox

(Urocyon cinereoargenteus)

Not closely related to the red fox, the grey fox actually represents an ancient lineage of canid. Where both species occur, as in San Diego county, the grey fox is dominant, and can be readily distinguished by its lack of black "stockings". The best tree-climber of all dogs, the grey fox tends to be more omnivorous than the red fox.

Where: Found in deciduous forests throughout the US and Mexico.

When: The grey fox is crepuscular or nocturnal.
