California Least Tern

(Sternula antillarum browni)

This tern has a limited range in southern California, breeding primarily in bays. Listed by both the state of California and the Federal Government as 'endangered', this species has increased in numbers since census work in 1974 began, but is still susceptible to habitat disturbance and natural disasters. This bird has long, narrow wings and a distinctive forked tail. It has a black-capped head and black-tipped wings and bill, contrasting with its white body.
