California Chipmunk

(Neotamias obscurus)

Chipmunks are small tree squirrels and prefer to feed on nuts and acorns though they are omnivorous and will eat worms, bird eggs and small invertebrates. They will transport food in their cheek pouches to their burrows, where they hoard it.

Where: Found only in North America, except for the Siberian chipmunk.

When: While Eastern chipmunks hibernate during winter, Western Chipmunks are active year-round and rather than hibernate rely on their stores.
