California Brown Pelican

(Pelecanus occidentalis californicus)

This small pelican is one of the most well-known birds found along the coasts of the southern and western US. Adults can grow up to 55 inches in length, and can weigh up to 12 pounds. They have very large bills, with a pouch on the bottom for draining out water when scooping up its prey. The plumage is grayish throughout, with a white head occasionally sporting a yellow wash in some adults.
