Black-tailed Jackrabbit

(Lepus californicus)


Black-tailed jackrabbits are large hares which reach a length of two feet and six pounds. Herbivorous, they are an important prey species of raptors and carnivorous mammals.

Where: The most widely distributed jackrabbit, the black-tailed jackrabbit, also known as the American desert hare inhabits shrub-land and grassland of the western US and northern Mexico, and does not migrate.

When: Seen year-round, this hare does not hibernate.
